David Epston has invented many imaginative, and startlingly successful ways of disappearing problems for children and young people, which he has documented in stories from his practice in many publications. This Collab revives David Epston's longstanding work with the problem of stealing, primarily with young people, which he developed in the last 70s/early 80s.

The Em-BODY-ing Conversations Consultation Group September 2021

The EM-BODY-ing Conversations Consultation Group is limited to 8 mental health workers or educators who have had experience with mindfulness, EMDR Therapy or Somatic-Oriented Therapies in addition to a Narrative Therapy approach. Through sharing tales of our work with those who consult us, we will explore what becomes possible when we create different kinds of scaffolding using sensations, images/visual metaphors and memories in non-discursive ways. Talking about anti-racist and inclusive somatic practices will be privileged throughout our time together. As a prerequisite, participants will have previously taken an Em-BODY-ing Conversations training (online or in person) or have experienced integrating at least one of the following modalities with a Narrative Approach: mindfulness, somatic therapies, EMDR. New group begins Monday, September 13, 2021.

October 17, 2021 Collab Salon: Reclaiming Lives from sexual violence: Understanding shame

Tim Donovan (Alice Springs, Australia) and Dale Johns (California Gully, Victoria, Australia) will apply narrative therapy approaches to counselling people who have been subject to sexual violence. The session includes a specific account of Dale’s experiences of childhood sexual violence. What is presented will challenge some traditional ideas around sexual assault counselling. There will be an opportunity to explore your beliefs around vulnerability and shame in your own work.

Narrative Therapy inquiry offers novel and exciting opportunities to explore membership in online communities and spaces. Whether it is through involvement with Discord servers or Team Speak or through informal groups through Facebook or WhatsApp, complexity and sophistication can be co-discovered in online communities. Vast possibilities exist around speaking about these groups and communities in Narrative Therapy and, in particular, the importance of these communities can be privileged and elevated instead of obscured or diminished.

November 20, 2022 Collab Salon: Improv Narrative: Saying “yes, and” in narrative therapy and social work across the globe

The principles of improv theater (making your partner look and feel good, counting on chaos and uncertainty, showing up for the moment) seem to be relevant to the current collective moment where there is still a lot of uncertainty. We became curious whether improv wisdom ideas and practices can go hand in hand with the narrative therapy and community work. We decided to talk to narrative practitioners from all over the world about their experiences around improvisation. This Salon will showcase the highlights of those conversations, provide space for reflections and new practices to emerge and, hopefully, give us an opportunity to play some improv games.

Anti-Machinalization (a.k.a. Burn-out) Global Summit Part II ~Three Years Later~

Have you seen anyone spending extraordinary hours working in isolation with the best of intentions, being fueled by expectations or a sense of obligation/responsibility even though the initial fuel was un-mistakably passion, curiosity, creativity and/or social justice? In our first Anti-Machinalization Global Summit 2019, we invited the very problem ‘Machinalization’ as our guest speaker who proudly presented its juicy techniques for machinalizing Sumie and so many other humans around the world. During the last two years, Machinalization seems to have grown even more powerful, developing cruelly-sophisticated tactics for orchestrating its global influences. Anti-Machinalization Global Summit 2021 will again invite Machinalization as our controversial and provocative guest speaker and have Sumie Ishikawa (with rich ‘insider’ experience) interviewed by her dear narrative sister, Amy Druker. Participants were invited to join in a group discussion, where taken-for-granted Machinalizing discourses and practices that are woven into the capitalistic structure of modern society can be called into question. David Epston has invented many imaginative, and startlingly successful ways of disappearing problems for children & young people which he has documented in stories from his practice in many publications. I have found that using his ideas successfully within my own practice has required more of me than simply following the guidance in the stories, and I have had failures along the way. In this Collab Salon, I will illustrate David’s approach to Temper Tantrums with using recent examples from my own practice to children & young people which have been successful in just two sessions. In this Salon, Charley Lang interviewed Barbara Herring (“B”) with two new members of our narrative community, Tanya Barr and Eric Katende, both black clinicians and recent graduates of Antioch University. Tanya, Eric and B spoke to both the challenges and the hopes experienced as black students, community members and therapists in a very white world. After small groups met, Tanya, Eric and B then selected participants’ questions to respond to in an engaged collaborative conversation.

June 20, 2021 Collab Salon: Reports from the LAB: Stories from youth dealing with homelessness at a community-arts center

Established in 2002, Le LAB is an endeavour of the CIPTO* in Gatineau, Quebec, dedicated to making arts and creative expression accessible to all. We focus on people at-risk of living or already living with challenges related to substance use, homelessness and social exclusion. The presentation will focus on the experience using storytelling in order to cultivate connection and empowerment within the activities of the LAB over the last year.
