Course Description

This course builds on our deep respect for narrative therapy’s founding principles and ethics while intentionally attending to affect and the body in our narrative work with people experiencing difficulties in their lives and relationships. Through eight lessons, we draw from philosophy and practices associated with The Affective Turn, integrating neurobiology, rich story development, trauma and its effects, memory theory, and emotional attunement. Join us as we rethink and enrich narrative therapy for contemporary clinical practice—honoring our roots while exploring embodied, affect-informed possibilities.
Reviewing where we are now, we reconsider some of our narrative therapy guides as we explore what affect and embodiment look like in practice. We also examine emerging creative innovations that integrate affective and somatic possibilities into narrative work — for example, approaches for working with intense emotions, attending to physiology, mindfulness practices, narrative expressive arts therapies, and cross‑pollination with EMDR and other somatic therapies.
Together, these developments steer us toward a more contemporary narrative therapy—one that features fresh voices across narrative generations and thoughtfully responds to the social, cultural, and clinical challenges of the 21st century.
For an additional $40, registrants can earn 18 APA-approved CE credits through Alliant International University.
