Outsider witness practices

September 17, 2023 Collab Salon: The Power of Resonance and Transport: Experiences of a Narrative Reflecting Team

The Vermont Center for Narrative Practice (VCNP) has been utilizing a Narrative Reflecting Team consultation model that incorporates the 4 part “Retelling” process outlined by Michael White (2005, p. 190)1 for Outsider Witnesses: 1) Expression 2) Image 3) Personal Resonance 4) Transport.  Through our conversation together at the Collab Salon, our aim is to share our experiences as a team particularly with the processes of Resonance and Transport and to learn how participants have also incorporated these elements into their own narrative practices (whether through reflecting teams or not). It is our hope that this dialogue will foster new understandings of these mechanisms and move us to consider different ways of incorporating these outsider witness practices into our work with others.

June 2018 Collab Salon: Narrative Group Therapy

Stephen Burton and Kevin O’Bryan presented their narrative approach to group therapy, which acts as an ongoing laboratory to test out new and preferred identities in the social situation of the group, while discouraging group level stories. Together we tried out a group interview with inquiry and outsider witnessing within the group.

October, 2015 Collab Salon: Exploring new possibilities for outsider witnessing

Over the years, The Collab developed a process for witnessing each other's discoveries and dilemmas. We called this discussion forum, 'I need a witness!" Now that Zoom makes it possible to meet in real-time, we'd like to think carefully together about how we might adapt intentional witnessing practices to bear witness to developments in Collab Salon members' work. Our intent is to co-create our own process for respectfully witnessing each other through this digital media. Prior to this Collab Salon, we asked members to review some of your own experiences with intentional witnessing, reflecting teamwork, and to send us your favorite outsider witness handouts with simple guidelines for reflection. After reviewing possibilities, Mike Giancola,  Charley Lang and Will Sherwin created our first cyber- interview with outsider witnessing.
