August 15, 2021 Collab Salon: Temper Tantrum Parties & Learning How to Apply David Epston’s Inventions

David Epston has invented many imaginative, and startlingly successful ways of disappearing problems for children & young people which he has documented in stories from his practice in many publications. I have found that using his ideas successfully within my own practice has required more of me than simply following the guidance in the  stories, and I have had failures along the way. In this Collab Salon, I will illustrate David’s approach to Temper Tantrums with using recent examples from my own practice to children & young people which have been successful in just two sessions. I will also touch on what I am a learning so far about applying David’s remarkable inventions. Kay Ingamells

Around the world, Covid-19 profoundly impacts our everyday lives. As narrative practitioners we are trained to double-listen to problems, to pay close attention to the suffering as well as to initiatives and events that might not be predicted by the problematic stories. What are some of the sparkling moments where the dominance of the pandemic problem disappears? Please join us as we begin our new year with a range of contributors sharing experiences and the joy of collaborative projects across the world: making poetry and art, creating Covid inspired music, learning from Community gatherings and from our children.

May 17, 2020 Collab Salon: Neurodiversity and Narrative Practice

What is your comfort level when working with someone who does not readily engage in conversation? What happens when a child is not quickly answering your questions? What do you do when the child is wandering the room and engaging in repetitive noises and actions? Courtney Olinger and Will Sherwin will share some ways that Narrative approaches can be utilized to support Neurodiversity and engage children with diverse levels of skills and abilities. They will explore ways that children with communication challenges and/or differences in play development can be centered in the circulation of their preferred experiences, identity and connections. Given the current COVID home confinement, they will also share some of their current experiences engaging children and families through Telehealth.

July 19, 2020 Collab Salon: How to live whilst dying? What children and young people with a Life Limiting Illness (LLI), can teach us about living

"Given the current realities of the COVID-19 pandemic the narratives around living and dying, choice and decision making, facing our own mortality, are all more paramount than ever and what is perceived as something that affects others and is ‘rare’ has come very much into everybody’s everyday life.  Whilst my work has always focused on children and families I hope the lessons they have taught me will be transferable to many situations and leave everyone with some thoughts to take away and consider both personally and professionally." July 21, 2019 Collab Salon: Working with children and families experiencing developmental disabilities

The Ummeed Team will discuss using narrative practices when working with young people experiencing developmental disabilities and their families. Using examples from practice we will share how we are adapting the ideas with young people who have diverse ways of expressing themselves in preferred identity development, navigating various systems of power in preferred ways and in making possible family-centred care, where caregivers and children become partners in the journey of therapy.

December, 2017 Collab Salon: Narrative community work in Burundi, Africa – Linda Moxley

The work of narrative practitioners in developing countries has challenges not usually encountered in the developed world where many of us work. The needs of developing countries, such as Burundi, are enormous, and the challenges in providing support are sometimes unexpected. In this presentation on our narrative project in Burundi we hope; first, to inspire others who might want to do this kind of work in developing countries with special needs; second, to inform narrative practitioners interested in doing this work; and third, to describe some of the challenges faced and the special knowledges gained of how to create awareness when doing this kind of work. Our experiences of trying to provide support for these children, and the teaching and training of caregivers who were learning narrative practices will also be described in this Collab Salon.
