February 2018 Collab Salon: Deconstructing ‘No’ in relational, intimate and sexual contexts

Mike Giancola and Diana Lozoya strove to highlight some of the ways that 'No' as a spoken form of not wanting socially, physically or sexually intimate contact may be used to bring partners and partner groups closer together. This may contrast with discursive notions of 'No' as a sign of flat rejection, failure or distancing. How can 'No' be reclaimed, valued, heard and respected by both the people who give the 'No' as well as those who receive it?

October 21, 2018 Collab Salon: Psychedelics and Psychotherapy: Narrative Explorations

As someone who is interested in the intersection between psychedelics and psychotherapy, Gabriel Garcia has many questions about the changing landscape of these substances, their legality, and viability as agents of psychological change. Gabriel presented some of the emerging models for working with stories of psychedelic experiences and fold these models into postmodern and narrative ideas. This was a springboard for the creating a generative discussion for those who attend.

May 2018 Collab Salon: Race & Privilege in the Therapy Room

As a Woman of Color and as a new private practice intern, I have had the experience of seeing many People of Color (POC) clients. Recently, I have noticed, an increase in Potential POC clients specifically seeking out a POC therapist.  At first glance, this increase seemed to be coincidental; I just thought that I was lucky to be receiving so much traffic from Psychology Today as well as many personal referrals.   After speaking to many of my clients in detail about their experiences, I inquired about why it was important to them to seek out a POC therapist.   Through that questioning, I began to recognize that many of my client's reasons were similar: they felt like a non-POC therapist would not understand them, or that they had a White therapist in the past with whom they felt they couldn’t be vulnerable or honest. Many of them acknowledged that these thoughts and feelings around race and privilege have increased exponentially in the present political climate.

January, 2018 Collab Salon: A Place in Your Heart – Will Sherwin

Will Sherwin hosted a "show and tell" discussion of books and articles that have contributed to the lives of multiple volunteer speakers.  After our usual introduction, Will will speak about the idea then each speaker will have five minutes to share a piece of writing that holds a special place in their heart and has influenced their work and how they treat others.  Writings do not have to be strictly from the narrative/postmodern world.  Will is hoping to get around eight people to sign up in advance to share in this experimental salon.  After the presentations there will five or ten minutes to discuss what was interesting about the format, what we might try differently next time.

December, 2017 Collab Salon: Narrative community work in Burundi, Africa – Linda Moxley

The work of narrative practitioners in developing countries has challenges not usually encountered in the developed world where many of us work. The needs of developing countries, such as Burundi, are enormous, and the challenges in providing support are sometimes unexpected. In this presentation on our narrative project in Burundi we hope; first, to inspire others who might want to do this kind of work in developing countries with special needs; second, to inform narrative practitioners interested in doing this work; and third, to describe some of the challenges faced and the special knowledges gained of how to create awareness when doing this kind of work. Our experiences of trying to provide support for these children, and the teaching and training of caregivers who were learning narrative practices will also be described in this Collab Salon.

October, 2017 Collab Salon: Harvesting the fruits of lived lives – Bobbi Rood & Mark Schmoll

Work with older adults often invokes re-membering conversations and sparks new pathways through connections with the past. By listening deeply we work with our clients to find strength, courage and agency to continue life’s journeys.  Often illness or loss forces us to accept unimagined challenges and changes that stretch our resources. By developing an understanding of these changes and mapping a new course, clients in the eldercare program call upon inner and outer resources to navigate the course, enrich their relationships and challenge expectations. Nearly 20 years ago Vermont addressed the problems of rural living and social isolation among elders who qualify as homebound and for whom psychotherapy is not accessible by creating traveling clinicians who visit elders in their homes to address family and individual issues. This program partners with community partners serving elders. This salon offered a glimpse into the work of the Eldercare Clinician and a sampling of some rescued word poetry.

Collab members and special guests came together for a conversation about teaching and learning narrative therapy.

May, 2017 Collab Salon: Landscapes of sexual activity and identity – Mike Giancola & Rob Santos

In this Collab Salon, Mike Giancola and Rob Santos will first present a framework, drawn from the sexual health movement, for organizing conversations about clients’ sexual hopes, preferences, values and practices. We will then convene a dialogue on the question of how these “sexual health principles” interact with key principles and practices in Narrative Therapy.
